First keynote session the 15th Private Sector Meeting for the Promotion of Trade and Joint Venture Investment among Islamic Countries Forum for Businesswomen in Islamic Countries, held in Tehran, Iran on 28th to 30th Oct. 2013

The first keynote session of the Joint the 15th Private Sector Meeting for the Promotion of Trade and Joint Venture Investment among Islamic Countries Forum for Businesswomen in Islamic Countries, held in Tehran, Iran on 28th Oct. 2013 focused on the challenges faced by OIC member states in enhancing economic cooperation. The session was chaired by Dr. Sabah Zanganeh, ICRIC board member.

 

 

 

The first speaker was Dr. Zubair Ahmed Malik, the president of FPCCI on the challenges of OIC member states, as logistics, tariffs, transportation, customs duty, etc. Dr. Malik also touched upon the OIC countries’ membership in WTO and the necessity of accession of the 4 countries to WTO, who have not acceded yet.

The panel went on with the speech of Dr. Mehdi Fakheri, the Director General of ICRIC, on Intra-OIC Trade and Investment. Dr. Fakheri enumerated some obstacles facing OIC member states as stumbling blocks to OIC trade development and cooperation, as lack of political will and policy making in this regard. Dr. Fakheri also recommended some measures to be taken by OIC counties in order to promote trade and investment in OIC member states, as tax incentives, tariffs reduction, trade-visa facilitation, common currency, etc.

Other speakers included:

  • Dr. Abd Alrahman Elzahi, from IDB, on the challenges of OIC member states’ trade.
  • Mr. Eren Kelelci, from ICD, on the objectives of ICD in promoting private sector.
  • Mr. Mustafa Adil, from COMCEC, on and introduction to COMCEC activities and objectives.
